“I am so happy to have found Art Adventures for my twin daughters. They absolutely adore this class and so do I. Claire and her team are magical! And clearly have a natural way with children. They inspire, teach, and instill a love for art in their students. This is no ordinary art class–They teach the children about real artists and inspire them to create their own art in the style of the artist they are learning about that day. When one of my then 4 year old daughters heard me talking about taking them to the Met to see the Picasso exhibit, she remarked, “Oh, Mommy, i know all about him—he was a Cubist!” and her sister joined in saying “Yes, he painted using shapes. Let’s go see the exhibit! We did that at Claire’s!” What more could any parent want in an art class???”

Here’s a brief look at some of the projects recently completed in the 6 & up classes. Check out the website and CCA’s flickr account to see even more!
For the month of January we explored exciting ways that regular old paper can be transformed into fantastic art. We studied a variety of artists and their techniques including: Mia Pearlman, Andrea Dezsö and Betrice Coron. Here you see the first stage of our cut paper mobiles project inspired by Mia Pearlman. Students each made at least two drawings with one featuring curvy shapes and one with angle shapes.
Here are some completed drawings…
The next step was to cut out some of the shapes created
Choosing which shapes to cut out, which to leave and just how much negative space to keep around the shapes were important decisions each student had to make about their artwork.
The next phase included assembling the pieces into a paper mobile. Here are some end results!
70’s mail art… receiving something new for Valentines Day.
Inspired by pop artist Ray Johnson http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Johnson, watch how collaboration takes place in the mail system! How does your artwork change? What’s added? Lines? Shapes? Stamps on top of stamps? Was it crinkled? Stained? Students will make their own images using watercolor, stamps, crayons and watercolor pencils, then see how it changes once they receive it the next week.
Welcome to Claire’s Creative Adventures, arts programming for families, children and adults!
