Winter Break is coming to an end, but that just means that you still have time for more fun! We’ve picked out a few awesome activities and places to visit as a family and enjoy the time together this weekend.
How do you create a sculpture from a car? Visit the Guggenheim and ask John Chamberlain!
What would you do if you could crush a car? Would you mold and twist it into a sculpture or flatten it into a pancake? Would you need to be a giant? Nope, you would not. The artist John Chamberlain has been twisting and forming sculptures from cars for the past few years, and this weekend the retrospective his work opens at the Guggenheim. So head over and imagine what you could do if you were a giant (or an artist like Chamberlain.)
When: John Chamberlain: Choices opens February 24th
For more information, visit the Guggenheim website
Want to design a sculpture of light like Dan Flavin?
Can you create a sculpture from light? Would you like to try. On Saturday at The Morgan Library and Museum, to coincide with the exhibition Dan Flavin: Drawing, children and families can take a tour of the exhibition and then create color sketches and sculpures inspired by Dan Flavin’s work.
When: Saturday, February 25th, 2-4pm
Where: The Morgan Library and Museum, 225 Madison Avenue at 36th Street
For more information, visit The Morgan Library and Museum website
.
Inside or outside, we’ve got options for you!
We know you’ve heard of the High Line and many have been to it, but since the weather is supposed to be nice this weekend, why not head on over and check it out? Plus, there are public art projects on view! Not in the mood for the outdoors (or there’s a change in weather), head on down to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens! With an indoor desert, rainforest, and warm tempature pavilions, explore different plant habitats right in NYC.
Where: The High Line
Where: Brooklyn Botanical Garden, 900 Washington Avenue
Travel on a Safari on the Intrepid!
All week the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum has been celebrating KidsWeek2012, and this weekend is Safari Weekend! With a variety of fun educational activities, performances, and live animals, what’s not to love?
Where: The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space, West side of Manhattan on Pier 86, 12th Ave. & 46th Street

How might you transform a 2-D sheet of newspaper into a 3-D artwork? Our young artists practiced tearing, crumpling, and folding to create our own version of Rauschenberg’s “Bed”. Next week, we will add paint, fabric, and found objects to our paper mache sculpture.
