For this piece, Betbeze shoveled hot coals from a bonfire onto the flokati and let them burn.  In some places they burned through and in others there are scorch marks.

Ever wondered what New York City looks like to birds and from planes?  Wish that you could fly and see?  Well now you can!  Come see The Panorama of the City of New York at the Queens Museum of Art.  Built by a team of 100 people working for architectural model makers Raymond Lester Associates over three years for the 1964 World’s Fair, it was part of the celebration of the City’s municipal infrastructure.  In 1992, Lester Associates made changes to over 60,000 models to bring the Panorama up to date.  Since 2009, the Queens Museum has adopted an Adopt-A-Building program to keep the Panorama in good condition and current. When you go and visit, create your own Scavenger Hunt by choosing a list of buildings and structures (like Citi Field) to find in the Panorama!

When: Open during museum hours

Where: Queens Museum of Art, New York City Building, Flushing Meadows Corona Park

For more information, visit the Panorama website.

Extended! – now on view through March 4th

Our admin, Mollie, has been to see this exhibition three times already and recommends it to anyone who loves puppets and Jim Henson.  A wonderful trip through the development and creation of our most loved characters, it is perfect for ages 5 and up.  There are 30 minute tours at 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as a variety of extra activities planned in conjunction with the exhibition.

2)   The Sweatshirt Sheep Workshop with John E. Kennedy – Feb 4 at 2:30pm

Sweatshirt_sheep-detail-main

If you head over to the Museum of the Moving Image, check out the puppet workshop!

John E. Kennedy, puppeteer on such productions as Sesame Street, Jack’s Big Music Show, andActivity TV, brings a sweatshirt sleeve to life in this puppet workshop featured in his book Puppet Planet. In this two-hour workshop, participants will see John’s short film, The Sure Sheep, then create their very own sheep puppets. Finally, they will try their hands at performing, getting an introduction to the advanced techniques of monitor work. Ages 8+

3)   Celebrating Lunar New Year: The Year of the Dragon at the Metropolitan Museum of Art – Feb 4, 11-4pm

Met_museum

Usher in good fortune and celebrate the Year of the Dragon—the most auspicious animal of the Chinese Zodiac—with performances, interactive gallery activities, and art-making workshops for all ages.

We wish that we could spend all day doing these activities (and maybe we will!)  The events run from 11am – 4pm and are free with museum admission.  Click on the link in the title or visit the Met website for a full list of activities.

4)   BAMkids Film Festival – All Weekend

Bamkids_film_festival

Returning for its 14th year, the BAMkids festival offers up something for everyone with 73 films from 26 countries.  In addition to films, the festival also offers Q&As with filmmakers, music performances, and puppet shows.  Take a look at the lineup (click on the title) and head to Brooklyn!

5)   Museum of Modern Art ~ So Much to Explore! – All Weekend

Moma_lab

On your next visit to MoMA, check out their Children’s LAB.  It’s a really cool interactive space meant to engage your children by allowing them to play and experiment using tools that relate to the artwork and exhibitions.  There is always an educator on hand to help and is a great addition to any trip to the museum (especially for young children.)  You can also get a sneak peak at work by artists that we will be studying during our Spring 2012 classes!

And remember, many NYC museums are free in the evening on the First Friday of the Month (tonight!)
